On April 30, 2018, a routine MRI at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital showed that Sofia's cancer had returned again, on her brain stem. Unfortunately, since this is her 3rd time with the same cancer in the same spot, her prognosis is terminal.
St. Jude had no open studies that were a good fit for Sofia, so in the middle of May, she enrolled in a clinical trial out of Children's Hospital of Atlanta. In July, she underwent surgery to remove her the tumor.
Sofia was enrolled on the experimental trial in Atlanta, since May, 2018, and had no sign of tumor growth, which is attributed to the experimental medication working. She completed 5 years of this medication protocol.
In May of 2023, after consulting with the trial doctors and her local oncologist, the chemo and immunotherapy regimen was completed.
Sofia currently has regularly scheduled MRIs. She is enjoying life and we are beyond grateful for everyone who has walked this medical journey with us.

In January 2014, at 18 months old, Sofia was diagnosed with a grade 2 Ependymoma, a cancerous brain tumor. She underwent 30 rounds of proton radiation and was cancer free for over 2 years.

In May 2016, a routine scan showed her cancer had returned.
July 1st, one week after her 4th birthday, Sofia underwent another tumor resection surgery, and 30 more round of Proton Radiation, this time as a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Sofia completed 40 treatments of Hyberbaric Oxygen (HBOT) in April of 2017 to help heal Radiation Necrosis she sustained during her cancer-fighting radiation treatments . She traveled to Detroit every weekday for treatment. It took just over 6 hours each day, from the time she left her home until the time she got back, for treatment. Her most recent scans confirm that her necrosis is under control. Her Doctor at St. Jude called her the poster-child for HBOT.
Sofia is a big sister to Nora, Zeke, and baby sister Jo. She loves to learn and is having a great year in 1st grade. She loves to read, play pretend, and enjoys Dr. Seuss's Ten Apples Up on Top.
Her current hobbies include: wearing crowns, fancy dresses and dress shoes, playing with small toys that get lost easily, ANYTHING Disney Princess, the movie Trolls, watching Youtube Kids, and taking pictures with her Instant Film camera.
